Police: 8-month-old beaten by parents had fractured skull, broken ribs

Raleigh, N.C. — Raleigh police arrested a man Wednesday and charged him with child abuse, alleging that he seriously injured his 8-month-old child on Oct. 29.

Devon Mayshawn Shields, 29, of 1617B Burgundy St., faces one count of intentional child abuse causing serious bodily injury. He was in the Wake County jail Thursday under a $250,000 bond.

According to an arrest warrant, the 8-month-old had two skull fractures, leg fractures, four broken ribs, stomach perforation, a bruised liver and spleen and a lacerated pancreas.

The child's mother, Trista Denise Miles, 22, was arrested and charged in the incident Nov. 10. She was in the Wake County jail Thursday under a $200,000 bond.

Raleigh police spokesman Jim Sughrue said Thursday that the child's injuries were life-threatening and that the child was being treated at WakeMed.

This is just so sad to hear, That baby truly doesn't serve all the damage that the parents did to him. I truly hope that if that precious baby is going to live a life of struggle that God takes him while he sleeps and show him the love and comfort that his parents NEVER showed him. I wish at this very moment that I was a jugde..... because I would want them to truly know fear ! I would want them to fear the day that they would Appear in front of me and have to explain why they chose to beat a precious, innoncent baby and not even care. I hope for once our judicial system stands up for the meak and innocent

PedsRN, you said a mouthful. I remember a commercial some years ago that showed a woman saying, "Don't hit them! You're bigger than they are!" and so on. It ended up that the woman was talking to herself in the mirror. Talk yourself out of doing harm to little ones. Do whatever you have to do. Give yourself a little time out.

Bond should be at least 1 million for each - what happens if this child dies - will they let them go on a plea deal - sure is a messed up justice system these days

Joanne, No One tells you how or What to Believe. God gave us all ( Or Most) a Brain to know what is Right or Wrong. You see Liberals have tied the hands of the Law. You can go out and Kill a Whole Family and not get the Death Penelty. People like this should be put in a Room and put the fear of Death in them. God Gave up all Common Sense, USE IT.

You should be saying there is a devil and he is evil, only he could make someone do something like this, God is real and He is love, He would never want anyone to do something like this. A poor innocent baby that if they didn't want, they could have given to a needy couple who would cherish this gift of God, how sad for this little one and how sad for you that you would say something like you did about our Lord and Savior.
