WILSON, N.C. — A 7-year-old boy died early Thursday after bullets were fired into a Wilson home Wednesday night, and police asked for the public's help in finding the gunman.

Officers responded to the 400 block of Parkview Street, a public housing community of duplexes near the intersection with Starmount Circle, at about 10 p.m. Wednesday after receiving a call about shots being fired into a house.

Kamari Jones died after being taken to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville for treatment.

Neighbor Joe "Tex" Brown said he heard six or seven gunshots.

"The shooter was between two buildings there, and he shot across the street," Brown said. "He shot across the street, hit at least two cars, and one of the shots apparently went into the bedroom window."

Peggy Edwards said she was in her kitchen with her two young children when she heard the shots.

"My first instinct was to tell them to get in their room and lay down because that could have been my kids," Edwards said. "I'm just so hurt for her right now."

She lives next door to the home where Kamari lived with his mother and an older sibling.

"I heard her inside the house crying, saying, 'My son got shot in the back of his head,'" Edwards said. "That's when I knew something wasn't right, and I broke in tears."

No one else was wounded in the shooting, but the right rear window of a car outside a home on Parkview Street was shot out.

Police have released few details of the investigation. They said they don't know whether the home was targeted, and if so, why.

"He was one of the sweetest little kids," Edwards said of Kamari. "He would always come out to play, and she would never let her kids outside for too long."

Parkview Street has had its problems, she said, but shooting and killing a 7-year-old is too much.

"I'm so ready to move," she said.

Police asked anyone with information about the shooting to call Crime Stoppers at 252-243-2255 or 252-399-2323.
