RALEIGH, N.C. — Sunshine will dominate on Thursday across central North Carolina, but it will do little to warm below-average temperatures that have been in place since Tuesday evening, WRAL meteorologist Aimee Wilmoth said.

Morning commuters were greeted by temperatures in the upper 20s to near freezing.

"We're staying in this northeasterly flow with a high-pressure system to our north," Wilmoth said. "It's keeping us well below normal, although we will see plenty of sunshine today."

Highs Thursday afternoon will top out in the upper 50s, about 10 to 15 degrees below normal for mid-April. Winds gusting to 10 to 15 mph will make it feel even cooler.

Cold temperatures will return Thursday night, but the area will stay above freezing ahead of the final day of the work week.

More clouds will move into North Carolina on Friday, and highs will reach the low 60s. On Saturday, the southeastern portion of the state could see showers as a low-pressure system moves up the East Coast.

"We can't rule out a shower in our southeastern counties, but the Coastal Plain will be the area that has to worry about showers the most on Saturday," Wilmoth said. "We'll have to track this system as it gets a bit closer to us."

The system will clear by Easter, leaving behind sunshine and warmer weather. Highs on Sunday will reach the low 70s.
