Here's what I like about the playground at Whippoorwill Park in Durham: The big letters that spell out the name of the park in the rubber surface under the play equipment.
The playground equipment here is pretty typical, featuring swings, slides and places to climb. The smaller piece, for kids ages 2 to 5, includes a short tunnel and a pretend "general store." I like that the playground isn't cluttered with equipment. There's some space here for kids to run around.
The park also has tennis courts, a youth baseball field, picnic tables and greenway access. It looks like there might be some drainage issues here. It hadn't rained for a while when I visited recently, but there were still plenty of muddy patches around the playground. There are bathrooms, but they were locked when we visited.
For a closer look at the playground, watch the quick video.
Whippoorwill Park is at 1632 Rowemont Dr. in Durham, a few blocks from Guess Road. It sits near Duke Homestead state historic site, a terrific family destination in Durham.
