Playground Review: Strickland Road Park

Here's what I like about the year-old Strickland Road Park in north Raleigh: It's pretty. Especially now, as the leaves turn, this 36-acre park full of hardwoods is a beautiful place to spend a morning or afternoon.

Of course, most kids will be looking for the action. And a lot of that will happen on the park's playground. You'll find two spaces for kids here - an area designed for kids ages 5 to 12 and a section for younger children, along with a swing set with bucket and belt swings.

The play piece for older kids is pretty typical with slides and things to climb. For younger kids, there's a large sand area that was peppered with all kinds of toys when we were there. You'll also find two small slides that are built into the side of a hill (a clear winner with both of my girls).

Between the two play areas is a concrete slab with a collection of benches, perfect for parents to hang out while their kids play.

Beyond the playground, the park offers a couple of mulched trails, including one that will take you to a scenic pond. There's also an open area next to the playground for general running around.

One big drawback: There's no bathroom here, just a Port-a-Potty.
