Playground Review: Mordecai Mini Park

A couple of things stand out about Mordecai Mini Park near downtown Raleigh: A fence circles the entire play area and it's not too far from other destinations that, when combined with a visit to the park, make for a nice day out.

A couple of things stand out about Mordecai Mini Park near downtown Raleigh: A fence circles the entire play area and it's not too far from other destinations that, when combined with a visit to the park, make for a nice day out.

The park at the corner of Poplar and Blount streets features the usual combination of slides, swings, monkey bars and pieces to climb on. There are four belt swings and two bucket swings here. Decks with picnic tables separate the two sections of the play area - one designed more for older kids and the other designed more for younger kids.

There also are small boulders to climb, concrete pads to hop across and tubes to climb through. And there's lots of sand. They've packed a lot into this little park, which the neighborhood played a role in designing and upgrading several years ago.

And how about that fence. The chain link fence along the park's border keeps kids from charging out into the street with no notice. If only more parks had fences like this.

If your kids are up for a walk of a couple of blocks or more, there are some other destinations to keep you busy or your tummy satisfied. Mordecai Historic Park with its collection of outdoor buildings and gardens is a fun place to visit. Seaboard Station Shops and the area around it offer some meal options.

You can nosh on some delicious chocolate and other treats at Escazu Artisan Chocolates just a couple of blocks away on Blount. You can check out what's growing at the Raleigh City Farm. And there's the strip of businesses along Person Street, including Yellow Dog Bread Company, Piebird and, of course, Krispy Kreme.

Mordecai Mini Park is at 1122 N. Blount St. in Raleigh. On-street parking is available. There are no public restrooms. For a closer look at the playground, watch the video.
