Playground Review: Lockwood Playground, Raleigh

Published: 2012-11-08 20:35:00
Updated: 2012-11-08 20:35:00

Lockwood Playground in Raleigh has a couple of things going for it.

It's close to WakeMed's Raleigh campus, making it a good place for kids, who are visiting a new sibling, friend or relative at the hospital, to run off a little energy. It's also on the city of Raleigh's greenway system and can be a nice spot to stop on a family bike ride for a picnic or break.

Lockwood Playground, upgraded with help from the community a couple of years ago, isn't giant. And the main play structure is geared primarily for kids ages 5 to 12, with tall slides and climbing structures, including a big synthetic rock (my seven-year-old's favorite).

There is a sand area here with a couple of diggers. And there's some green space to run around, along with a few scattered benches and picnic tables.

One drawback: No bathroom. Parking is along Crabtree Boulevard.

Lockwood Playground sits off the Buckeye Segment of the Crabtree Creek Trail, all part of the city of Raleigh's greenway system. The Crabtree Creek Trail takes you to North Hills Park, another great park, and, eventually, Crabtree Valley Mall.

For a closer look at Lockwood Park, watch the video.

Find Lockwood Playground at 1200 Crabtree Boulevard. It's about 1.3 miles from WakeMed's Raleigh Campus on New Bern Avenue.
