Playground Review: Durham's Herndon Park

Published: 2013-02-21 20:45:00

After a slog through the mall, the last thing my kids want to do is head directly home.

And, frankly, that's the last thing I want to do to. I know they've been cooped up indoors in the car and then shopping. And while we don't go to the mall a lot, when we do, I always try to schedule some active time before or after the visit.

So this is why a visit to Herndon Park in Durham will often be a stop for us after a trip to The Streets at Southpoint. Less than three miles from the major Durham mall, Herndon Park was a welcome respite for all of us earlier this week.

This isn't a massive park. Instead, you'll find a nice collection of athletic fields, along with a decent sized playground. There's nothing new or unusual here as far as the playground equipment is concerned. There are slides, monkey bars and places to climb, along with belt swings (but no bucket swings). There are two play pieces here - one for older kids and a smaller one for younger kids.

Head beyond the playground toward the baseball and soccer fields to find some giant baseballs and soccer balls (a big favorite for my sports-loving kids).

For a closer look at the park, watch the quick video tour. Herndon Park is found at 511 Scott King Rd. in Durham. The park has greenway access. There was a port-a-potty there. And there was plenty of parking when we were there (though there was only one game happening at the time).

Go Ask Mom features places to take kids every Friday. Looking for other ideas? Check our park and playground reviews and posts on Triangle family destinations.
