The pizza dough directions using the dough ball from Harris Teeter are now in the WRAL Recipe Database. We have had many requests for it so now it is in an easy to find location.

The wheat and white dough balls found in the deli department of some grocery stores (especially Harris Teeter) often go on sale for $1 - $1.25. When they do, this is a good time to buy a couple extra to put into the freezer. They freeze well for at least 2 months. Combined with some frugally purchased toppings, homemade pizza using the dough balls is a delicious, low cost meal the whole family will enjoy!

You can access the database from the home page of the Smart Shopper blog. It is on the right side of the page under the Smart Shopper Resources section.

Click on the Recipe Database link in the box above for the database. Then type in Pizza Dough in the Name section. Then click Search and the recipe will appear.

Below, I have also posted the recipe for homemade pizza that I make using the dough balls. Please share your recipes using these dough balls as well!

Homemade pizza using dough ball crust

Ingredients:

1 wheat or white dough ball (usually found at Harris Teeter in the deli section and often on sale for $1.00 - $1.25)

Favorite pizza toppings including sauce, veggies, meat, cheese, spices, etc

Directions:

Thaw wheat or white dough ball in fridge. Roll out onto pizza pan or cookie sheet with lightly oiled rolling pin. Lightly coat edges of crust with olive oil, if desired. Season with garlic powder and Italian spices all over crust, if desired.

Pre-bake crust in 425-degree oven for about 7 minutes. Remove crust from oven and put sauce and desired toppings and then cheese on to the crust. Bake until cheese is melted, approximately 10 – 12 minutes. Enjoy!

We have started cutting the dough ball in half (at the wise suggestion of another reader) and making 2 pizzas out of it. My girls like just a couple veggies on their pizza (mushrooms and black olives). My hubby and I prefer to have it loaded with veggies including some that the girls do not especially like on their pizza. We all like a thinner crust and when you use one whole dough ball on a standard pie crust stone, it is a thicker crust than we prefer.

Some folks have posted on the Smart Shopper blog that they do not pre-bake their HT crust. They roll it out, top it and bake. I like to pre-bake the crust because I know it is cooked through and I like a more well done crust.

Enjoy!

Creamy Spinach Pizza Recipe

I tried a new pizza concoction using the HT dough ball crust last week. I rolled out and pre-baked 1/2 the crust as indicated above. I cooked a box of Green Giant Creamed Spinach in the microwave. I then used the creamed spinach as the "sauce" and topped it with fresh tomatoes from our little garden, onions, mushrooms and black olives. I topped that with some 2% mozzarella cheese, garlic powder and Italian seasonings and baked for another 10 minutes, approximately. My husband said it was the best homemade pizza yet. He LOVES creamed spinach so this was a homerun meal for him!
