Pizza delivery drivers robbed minutes apart in Raleigh
Two pizza delivery drivers were robbed within minutes of each other Friday at separate locations in Raleigh, prompting renewed concerns about occupational safety.
Posted — UpdatedThe first robbery happened at 10:40 a.m. as a Papa John’s employee was delivering to the 6500 block of Daybrook Cricle, police said. The driver was robbed of cash and the pizza.
Raleigh police said the second robbery may have been a crime of opportunity while the first was intentional.
The crimes have pizza shop owners worried.
Rania Droubi and her family recently bought Mr. Pizza & Salad on Peace Street. They plan to start delivery service next month.
“When we said we don’t have delivery, they get mad and tell us bad things. We’re going to lose business and we’re going to lose customers,” she said about the decision to start delivery.
Pizza delivery drivers are often called to unfamiliar neighborhoods. The uncertainty of what may happen can be unsettling, but drivers say it’s part of the job.
“We should be careful,” Droubi said. She plans to set safety guidelines for her drivers.
