Pizza delivery driver gets away from would-be robbers

Posted March 7, 2013

— Two men who tried to rob a pizza delivery driver in Goldsboro were arrested after they chased the driver back to the restaurant and threatened him, police said Thursday.

The Papa John’s driver told Goldsboro police that he delivered an order Wednesday to the Irish Inns Motel, at 1104 Sunburst Drive, and was leaving when he encountered the men in a dark-colored Toyota Highlander.

The driver said the men tried to rob him, but he fled and called 911 as he headed back to the restaurant. The men followed the driver to the restaurant, where they allegedly threatened him.

Police found the suspects a short time later at the Irish Inns and arrested them. Brandon Lee Cannon, 20, of the 300 block of Belton Circle in Goldsboro, and Santonio Monquail James, 24, of the 100 block of Fisher Drive in Goldsboro, were both charged with attempted common law robbery.

They were held under a $10,000 secured bond and were scheduled to appear in court Thursday.

My college age son used to deliver food and some nights, were very late hours. I would constantly worry about him. Just as penelope1 wrote, the tips are not very good. He would tell me about delivering to some reputable places and they wouldn't tip him all! I pray all the time for the food delivery guys.

Looks like they were trying to set the driver up by ordering a pizza for a motel and waiting for him to show. Scumbags.

So, how long before the driver is fired for running from the would be robbers?

  • penelope1 Mar 7, 2013

My son is a college student in Greensboro and drives for Jimmy John's poor thing he doesn't get very good tips; don't have much money on him at all and I worry about this sort of thing happening to him all the time. I think Ceanothus is right thinking this was a setup.

Could have been a setup. It's unlikely the perps were waiting around in the parking lot hoping a food delivery guy would show up. Then, to chase the guy back to the restaurant? Either there's something in the water in Goldsboro, or there's a lot more to this incident.

How much money did they think a pizza delivery person would have on him?

  • Rebelyell55 Mar 7, 2013
