RALEIGH, N.C. — A Pittsboro woman died Monday night after she was rear-ended on Interstate 540 westbound and pushed into traffic that was backed up due to an earlier crash.

Dolores Wakefield was stopped in the roadway around 8:30 p.m. because of the earlier crash near Leesville Road, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. Authorities said Brittaney Lowe-McGregor, of Raleigh, was driving in the same direction but failed to slow down, crashing into the back of Wakefield's car.

Troopers said Wakefield's vehicle was pushed into the back of another car in front of her.

Wakefield was pronounced dead at the scene.

Lowe-McGregor was taken to WakeMed with serious injuries, and she was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and failure to reduce speed.
