PITTSBORO, N.C. — A Pittsboro man who was a cadet in Appalachian State University's ROTC program died Wednesday due to complications from dehydration, university and ROTC officials said Thursday.

Christopher Hasbrouck participated in the Mountain Man Memorial March, a marathon-length march or run through the Smoky Mountains to honor fallen soldiers, on April 20 in Gatlinburg, Tenn., according to Lt. Danny Kelley, spokesman for ROTC at the University of Tennessee.

Hasbrouck was overcome by the heat and became dehydrated, Kelley said. He was taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center, where he died Wednesday.

The UT ROTC and American Legion held a ceremony in his honor Thursday, Kelley said.

Appalachian State is holding a memorial on campus Friday.
