Pinterest Fail: Popular unicorn cake not so easy to make

Posted April 11

Pinterest is the home to Unicorn Cake tutorials. But beware, it isn't so easy.

— When your expectations are much higher than your actual ability, you are headed for a fail. And when trying to accomplish some of the cool do-it-yourself home projects, crafts and recipes that you see on the popular website Pinterest, fails are common.

But apparently, Pinterest Fails are a thing. They are a popular hashtag and even have their own website. This is the story of my most recent Pinterest Fail. It involves the popular Unicorn Cake designs that are popping up everywhere on Instagram, Pinterest and Twitter.

Actress and former "The Vampire Diaries" star Nina Dobrev even had one of these cakes for her birthday.

With a good friend's birthday coming up (and my own personal need to do some stress baking), I decided to make one of these cakes. How hard could it be? I found a tutorial on Pinterest. I couldn't find edible gold paint for the horn, so I settled on purple.

What I didn't bank on was that my 4-year-old son would want to help. And by help, he wanted to make his own unicorn cake and promptly stole one of my three layers. He also wanted to steal all of the icing for his cake.

As I tried to decorate this two-layer cake, I realized that it wasn't going to be tall enough. Then, the gel paint I used for the eyes started to run. And when I attempted to make a flower out of icing, I realized that I really don't know how to do that. After another Pinterest tutorial on how to do that, I realized that this was going to be a double Pinterest fail kinda day.

And if you are wondering this photo is of my cake, not his. He destroyed his one layer cake with his bare hands.

Pinterest fail: Unicorn Cake

I figured I couldn't be the only person to have this type of Unicorn Cake Fail, but apparently it was only me. Thanks, internet!

After this colossal failure of cake decoration (it tasted amazing though! My only Pinterest successes of the day - homemade cake and icing recipes nailed!), I decided to scrape off the colored icing and spray the edible purple paint over it. The cake looked OK, but not the unicorn I wanted at all.

I hadn't planned to even share the photo or do this post, but my friend said it was the funniest cake she had ever seen.

Next time, I'll go with one of our great local bakeries in town like Sweet Traditions by LeAne or Edible Arts.

There's baking with the kids, then there's serious baking. The mistake here was mixing the two.
