PINEHURST, N.C. — The Village of Pinehurst Police Department has won an award from a national trade publication for the snappy design of its patrol cars.

The graphic look of the department’s blue-and-white Dodge Chargers is the grand prize winner of the 2013 International Police Vehicle Design Contest sponsored by Law & Order magazine. The department will receive the award in August during the Police Fleet Expo in Charlotte.

The design was spearheaded by Deputy Chief Floyd R. Thomas, who said the bright paint scheme and reflective materials are a functional feature.

“This is especially important at night in the Village of Pinehurst because traditionally there is no street lighting outside of the core of the village,” he said in a statement Thursday.

The design also includes a QR code that allows smartphone users to take a picture and link directly to the department’s website for information and updates.

The department began using the new design on its 2011 Chargers.
