Pinehurst No. 2: Hole 2

This was the most difficult hole in the 2005 U.S. Open, averaging 4.5 strokes. A drive to the left gives the best look at the green as the right side is heavily bunkered.

Gerald Owens, anchor/reporter: This is a long hole – keep it left off the tee or you face a challenging approach shot.

Jeff Gravley, sports anchor: One of the most difficult holes for amateurs and the pros is the par-4 2nd. It will be a 507-yarder in the Open and several changes have been made. They lengthened the hole by 35 yards, expanded the fairway bunker on the left and the bunkers were elevated to see from the tee box. They also protected the front lip of the fairway bunkers with thick, tall wiregrass. I avoided the fairway bunkers but found the woods to the right. I still had a 2nd shot from the pine needles but had no shot at the green. Another bad execution around the green left me in the wrong spot on the green and another 3-putt added to my score. Those turtle-back greens will make you sarcastically mumble, “Thank you Donald Ross.” He’s the original designer in 1907 who called it “the fairest test of championship golf I have ever designed.”
