Pinehurst No. 2: Hole 18

A hole-by-hole look at Pinehurst No. 2 ahead of the US Open in June.

Par 4, 451 yards, HCP 2/4

There’s a deep fairway bunker to the right and a greenside bunker short right that are tough.

Our take:

Gerald Owens, anchor/reporter: This hole has a slight dogleg to the right and I found the trap off the tee. Avoid that and you can easily get on in two. It has a large green protected by two massive bunkers.

Jeff Gravley, sports anchor: We played the 18th with the same pin placement from the U.S. Open of 1999. My drive went left and found a nice clump of wire grass. But the ball was sitting up and I had a shot to the green. That’s when I hit one of my best shots of the day, a “be-backer” I call them. You hit it, like it, and say, “I’ll be back to play golf again.” My shot from the wire grass landed in the center of the 18th green leaving me with a similar putt that Payne Stewart made to win the ‘99 Open. Of course, that’s all I kept thinking about on my walk to the green. Well, I gagged the putter and 3-putted for a bogey. Again, you score from 150 yards in and I failed.
