Pine Forest football leading rusher charged in July shooting incident

A Pine Forest High School senior football player was charged Tuesday with stealing a gun and using it to shoot a man in the face.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A Pine Forest High School senior football player was charged Tuesday with stealing a gun and using it to shoot a man in the face.

Police allege that Willis Anthony, 17, of 612 Barber Road, stole a .45 caliber handgun from William John Mathes and used it in an assault of Detric Savaughn Steele.

The Fayetteville Police Department issued a warrant for Anthony's arrest on Tuesday, but he was not yet in custody by Wednesday morning. According to the warrant, the shooting happened on July 14.

Anthony is listed on the Trojans football roster as a two-way player, at running back and outside linebacker. Through five games, he has been the team's top rusher, gaining 500 yards and scoring five touchdowns on 82 carries.​
