WILSON, N.C. — The state Highway Patrol is investigating after a person was killed Monday afternoon in a wreck in Wilson County.

Troopers said a Volkswagen Beetle collided with a tractor trailer at about 3:45 p.m. on N.C. Highway 58 near Thompson Chapel Road.

"The Volkswagen crossed the centerline for no apparent reason,” 1st Sgt. Jerry Cameron with the Highway Patrol said.

"It sounded like a bomb went off,” witness Donnie Skinner said of the crash.

The car caught fire and rolled into a ditch.  The driver was killed, troopers said.

The 55-year-old driver of the tractor trailer, Donny Edwards of Wilson, was transported to Wilson Memorial Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

More details, including the identity of the Volkswagen's driver, haven't been released. Troopers said because of the fire, the driver's identification must be made using dental records.

Traffic was backed up on N.C. Highway 58 for a short time following the wreck.

Both vehicles were traveling the posted speed limit and no charges are expected to be filed, troopers said.
