Man hit, killed by Amtrak train in Mebane

An Amtrak train bound for Raleigh hit and killed a person Wednesday afternoon in Mebane, officials said.

MEBANE, N.C. — A Raleigh-bound Amtrak train hit and killed a man Wednesday afternoon in Mebane, officials said.

The incident happened at about 2:15 p.m. near South First Street and U.S. Highway 70.

Charlie Andrew Johnston, 50, of Mebane, was attempting to cross the railroad tracks when he was hit, authorities said.

A total of 58 passengers were on board the Piedmont, officials said. No other injuries were reported.
