— The Perquimans County Courthouse is the oldest in continuous use in the state and also houses the oldest recorded land deed in the North Carolina. The deed came when a white man bought a piece of local property from an Indian chief. The transaction is believed to be the first time in North Carolina, and perhaps anywhere, that Native Americans were paid for their land.
