RALEIGH, N.C. — Gov. Beverly Perdue will be among the mourners and speakers at funeral services for a leading Democrat in the North Carolina Legislature.

Perdue will participate in Saturday's funeral of Rep. William Wainwright, who died Tuesday at age 64 after more than 20 years in the state House. Perdue and Wainwright both hailed from Craven County, served in the Legislature together and were political allies.

Wainwright's funeral was scheduled for a New Bern middle school, with interment to follow at a Havelock cemetery.

Perdue had directed state flags be lowered at state buildings until dusk Saturday in honor of Wainwright. Now, North Carolina and U.S. flags will remain at half-staff through Wednesday as a tribute to the victims of the mass shooting at a Colorado movie theater.
