Pedestrian injured in Raleigh crash dies, police say

Raleigh police said the man was struck by a car on Garner Road just after 8:15 p.m. The man was taken to WakeMed for treatment of life-threatening head injuries.

RALEIGH, N.C. — A man who was struck by a vehicle Wednesday night in Raleigh has died, police said Thursday.

Raleigh police said the man was struck by a car on Garner Road just after 8:15 p.m. The man was taken to WakeMed for treatment of life-threatening head injuries. A wreck report from the Raleigh Police Department identified the man as Leonard Howard Chandler, 73, of Fuquay-Varina.

The report said Chandler tried to cross the street when he was hit by the northbound vehicle. A streetlight near the area of the crash was inoperative at the time, according to the report.

Garner Road was closed for about two hours between Calloway Drive and Newcombe Road while investigators cleared the scene.
