Pedestrian killed in Durham train crash

Posted January 29, 2013

— A pedestrian was struck and killed by an Amtrak train in Durham Tuesday evening, police said.

The crash happened around 7:30 p.m., about a quarter-mile from the train crossing on Buchanan Boulevard near West Main Street.

The eastbound 76 Piedmont passenger train was heading to Raleigh from Charlotte and traveling 55 mph at the time of the wreck, an Amtrak spokesperson said. None of the train's 35 passengers or crew members were hurt.

The train was stopped on the tracks while authorities investigated. It resumed its trip shortly before 10 p.m.

Investigators said they have not identified the victim.

No other information was released.

2.5 hours seems excessive. When a pedestrian gets hit by a train the cause is either suicide or stupidity. Why inconvenience all the train passengers with such a long delay?

Sad to read this story. People should know by now that you cannot beat a moving train. My condolences to his family and many friends.

Would you rather them just throw the body off to the side and keep going? What kind of a comment is that? If that did happen, you would be asking why didn't they do a more thorough investigation? Can't win ever. I guess people have to start knowing another route to their destination.

"Pedestrian?" Isn't it illegal to walk on the train tracks?

  • daddyankee Jan 30, 2013

Um it was a joke. This underscores the need for more irony and sarcasm training in our schools.

Um, these are suicides. It has nothing to do with train safety.

This is happening far too often in Morrisville too.

Wow. This same train killed another "victim" last Sunday night in Kannapolis. This really underscores the need for more train education in our schools.

It would be even better if there was a guy walking in front of it warning everyone that a train is coming. It's not the trains that are at fault (they are travelling way too slow) but a heavily outdated infrastructure (access is to easy, too many collision crossings, etc.) and people's stupidity. Also, if someone was to walk on I40's shoulder without paying attention - they are very likely to get hit too.

Durham's rail tracks should have been fixed a long, long time ago, just like a lot of other infrastructure.

Why does it take 2.5 hours to investigate?

it takes time to remove the body, identify damage to train, clean up train and find replacement train crew. That is, if it looks like a clear cut case like suicide. These are never easy on the train crew.
