A pedestrian was struck and killed by an Amtrak train in Durham Tuesday evening, police said.

The crash happened around 7:30 p.m., about a quarter-mile from the train crossing on Buchanan Boulevard near West Main Street.

The eastbound 76 Piedmont passenger train was heading to Raleigh from Charlotte and traveling 55 mph at the time of the wreck, an Amtrak spokesperson said. None of the train's 35 passengers or crew members were hurt.

The train was stopped on the tracks while authorities investigated. It resumed its trip shortly before 10 p.m.

Investigators said they have not identified the victim.

No other information was released.

2.5 hours seems excessive. When a pedestrian gets hit by a train the cause is either suicide or stupidity. Why inconvenience all the train passengers with such a long delay?

Sad to read this story. People should know by now that you cannot beat a moving train. My condolences to his family and many friends.

Why does it take 2.5 hours to investigate?

Would you rather them just throw the body off to the side and keep going? What kind of a comment is that? If that did happen, you would be asking why didn't they do a more thorough investigation? Can't win ever. I guess people have to start knowing another route to their destination.

"Pedestrian?" Isn't it illegal to walk on the train tracks?

Um it was a joke. This underscores the need for more irony and sarcasm training in our schools.
