DURHAM, N.C. — A pedestrian was critically injured Wednesday morning when he was struck by a car on U.S. Highway 70 near Lynn Road, police said.

The incident occurred at about 6:15 a.m. when Keith Lamont Small, 64, of Durham, was crossing U.S. 70 and stepped into the path of an eastbound 2004 Mazda driven by Douglas Lynn Turner of Durham, police said.

Turner’s view was obstructed by a vehicle in the adjoining lane, and he did not see Small, police said. Speed and alcohol didn't appear to be factors in the incident, according to investigators.

Small suffered critical injuries and was taken to Duke University Hospital for treatment. Turner wasn't injured.

Investigators don't anticipate filing charges in the accident, police said.

The incident slowed traffic on U.S. 70 for more than an hour.
