CARY, N.C. — A pedestrian was hit by a car Thursday night on westbound Interstate 40 in Wake County, according to the State Highway Patrol.

Warren Woods, 29, of Raleigh, had run out of gas and was walking down the shoulder of the highway with a gas can at about 9:20 p.m., authorities said.

People from California were driving on I-40 and pulled onto the shoulder of I-40 near Harrison Avenue to check for directions on their GPS and hit Woods, authorities said. The car was going about 45 mph when Woods was hit, they said.

Woods, who was wearing dark clothing, suffered non-life threatening injuries. He was listed in good condition Friday at WakeMed.

Authorities said no charges will be filed in the case.

One lane of I-40 was closed for about an hour while authorities were at the scene.
