— A pedestrian was hit by a car Thursday night on westbound Interstate 40 in Wake County, according to the State Highway Patrol.

Warren Woods, 29, of Raleigh, had run out of gas and was walking down the shoulder of the highway with a gas can at about 9:20 p.m., authorities said.

People from California were driving on I-40 and pulled onto the shoulder of I-40 near Harrison Avenue to check for directions on their GPS and hit Woods, authorities said. The car was going about 45 mph when Woods was hit, they said.

Woods, who was wearing dark clothing, suffered non-life threatening injuries. He was listed in good condition Friday at WakeMed.

Authorities said no charges will be filed in the case.

One lane of I-40 was closed for about an hour while authorities were at the scene.

The driver pulled onto the shoulder and hit the pedestrian? Did the driver have his/her eyes closed??

Glad the victim will be ok.

umm, if you have to check your GPS for directions, pull over and STOP, don't drive on the shoulder of the road. Logic also dictates if you have to pull over you LOOK very carefully as you pull over to make sure it is safe.

Not that long ago I was driving and had to pull over for an ambulance. My priority was to make sure I did so safely (rural road, no other traffic even).

The person who killed that kid was most likely drunk or driving without a license. There's a reason they didn't stop.

Thankfully, it was not a hit and run. Some people are honest.

We walk to get help because our phones are dead, and our car quit working.

Why do people walk along interstates around here?
