Raleigh, N.C. — Road crews will close down lanes on Interstate 40 in Raleigh Wednesday night to repair damaged asphalt, according to North Carolina Department of Transportation officials.
The work to improve pavement will help smooth out roadway rough patches and potholes; the improvements will also include new lane markings and the replacement of reflective roadway markers.
Crews will close lanes on Interstate 40 west between South Saunders Street and Lake Wheeler Road at 9 p.m. on Wednesday.
At 11 p.m., a second closure will take place for the South Saunders Street ramp to I-40 east, which will allow the same type of asphalt work.
The ramp closures will send motorists from both directions on South Saunders Street toward detour routes.
Traffic out of downtown Raleigh will go under I-40, turn left on Rush Street and then take a left on Hammond Road to reenter I-40 east. Motorists on South Saunders Street will continue on to Martin Luther King Boulevard, turn right and then take another right onto Rock Quarry Road to return to I-40.
Officials said the South Saunders Street ramp will reopen by 5 a.m. on Thursday.
