Pastor, wife found dead outside Robeson County home

Posted August 22, 2014

— Robeson County authorities are investigating the deaths of a pastor and his wife who were found dead at their Lumberton home Wednesday afternoon.

Investigators won't comment on the case other than to say that it did not appear that William Scott, 68, and Charlotte Scott, 64, died of natural causes.

Sheriff Kenneth Sealey met with the Robeson County district attorney Friday and said he was awaiting preliminary autopsy results.

The couple's granddaughter found them outside on the patio at their house on Old Whiteville Road around 2:30 p.m.

William Scott was a pastor at Charity Baptist Church in Gray's Creek, and he also served as the treasurer at East Lumberton Baptist Church.

Church members learned of the deaths Wednesday.

"He was involved in so many things – anything that had to be built or worked on, he did. She was so active," said Betty Rising. "Anything that needed to be done, Charlotte would do it. This is certainly a real blow to our community and our church."

Charlotte Scott's funeral has been planned for 2 p.m. Monday at East Lumberton Baptist Church. Plans for William Scott have not been finalized.

I thought this was a murder-suicide? What changed?

I sure hope this is not a murder/suicide, but the Reverend was the church treasurer. Money is often at the heart of tragedy.

My thoughts and prayers go out to their family and friends. No matter the circumstances they are in deep emotional pain.

Mr. Scott was affiliated with the church at which Mrs. Scott's funeral is planned.

I think it is odd that they are not having their funerals at the same time, and not having them at the church that he pastored...

This pastor & his wife were with associated with a church that promotes 'Judgement House", an evangelical " Halloween House" where the frights are what will happen to you if you are gay, have an abortion, or commit suicide ( spoiler alert, they all go to HE77!) I wonder how the congregation will respond if the pastor& his wife did have a suicide pact?

However it happened, it's very sad. My heart goes out to everyone who knew and loved them.

Tragedy strikes everywhere - Christian or otherwise. I am praying for the family and community. People are HURTING and STRUGGLING more than we know. No matter how they look, we REALLY don't know what each is facing.
