— A passenger jumped out of a car before a routine traffic stop early Friday, then the driver tried to speed away but crashed into a tree, Raleigh police said.

An officer tried to pull over the car for a registration violation shortly before 2 a.m., police said. One person jumped out of the car and ran away.

The driver then took off but crashed into a tree on Longview Lake Drive, police said. A second passenger jumped from the car and ran away.

Police took into custody the driver, who had non-life-threatening injuries. He was taken to WakeMed.

Police said early Friday that they are still searching for both suspects.

"Yeah, BluePirate, I was thinking the same thing. Last I checked it's not illegal to run from an accident if you are a passenger. The driver can't run, they are the one the cop is pulling over. Who knows, maybe the runners had an appointment they were going to be late for and needed to go find another ride...."

Actually, when there is a wreck, everyone is legally required to stay with the car until police complete their investigation. EVERYONE, including passengers. Also, do you really think people run from a trffic stop for anything other than serious crimes? They don't. And doing so creates reasonable suspicion to stop them (that's the level required for officers to stop someone, not probable cause).

Also, try to understand the article. The first suspect ran before the crash. The second ran after the wreck. Both are suspects. Care to wager on whether or not the driver had priors for more than just traffic tickets?

2beachy4u, I like the beach too :) but I value my freedoms and rights. You are naive to think that just because you are innocent and have nothing to hide that you can't be detained, charged, convicted, and jailed. Here is a video on 5th amendment and why you should invoke it:

Please bring us some real news for this is not really news. People do this all the time. I get rid of these people that continue to bring bad news.

LocalYokel, I know it's illegal but obviously these people were doing something illegal or they wouldn't have ran and try to flee the police. As far as me, if you see me riding around you will notice my child in a car seat and me following the laws that I am supposed to . As far as the full body scanner, most would enjoy to watch that :). I would allow my car/house to be search and me to be interrogated because I would have nothing to hide. I visit the beach frequently because my child and I enjoy hanging out on the beach together not because of the illegal activities. If you catch me riding around in the middle of the night with an expired registration, then it's not me and it certainly isn't my tags on the vehicle. Honestly, you can look at someone most of the time and tell how they are...especially riding around in the middle of the night... I am sure you have done this yourself....

Probably no real need to describe these people. I'd say they are probably all caucasian professionals....maybe doctors and nurses or ministers and teachers or............

"I was 23 at the time, white, female, leaving a restaurant that doesn't serve alcohol at 8pm on a weeknight, " mpheels

lol, I remember being pulled over by Fayetteville PD for being a drunk driver after work but I was sober. HA HA, I told him it was the the steering wheels fault. ROFL.

Really, I was exhausted and tired and think I was only on 2 hours sleep after a 12 hour shift.
