Parkton firefighter dies of heart attack

Posted January 30, 2011

— A Parkton volunteer firefighter died of an apparent heart attack after collapsing while on duty Saturday night.

James Walters Sr., 57, and another firefighter were doing paperwork when he collapsed, said Fred Bodenheimer, vice chair of the board of directors for the Parkton Volunteer Fire Department.

CPR and a defibrillator were used on Walters at the station, and an EMS crew took him to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, said Bodenheimer. He was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Walters was a training officer. His wife, Jackie, also works for the department.

James was a dear friend and neighbor. He was a very hard worker. There wasn't too much he wouldn't do for people. He will be dearly missed.May God be with his family and friends as they go through these trying times.May you rest in peace my dear friend.

Rest in Peace, old friend. James was a wonderful person who always went out of his way to help others. My heart goes out to his son and the rest of the people who loved him.
