Park rangers find missing Raleigh hikers

Posted July 20, 2009

— Two hikers from Raleigh who were missing overnight at Hanging Rock Sate Park were found Monday morning, authorities said.

The two 19-year-olds, whose names weren't released, left shortly before 6 p.m. Sunday for a hike between the Upper Cascade and Lower Cascade waterfalls, an area authorities described as a deep gorge with steep slopes and thick brush.

The men were supposed to meet two other hikers, but the other pair backed out when they ran into trouble hiking, authorities said. The men had no camping equipment.

Authorities were contacted about the missing hikers about 1:30 a.m., and several agencies assisted in the search.
