FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — The city of Fayetteville dedicated a new park Tuesday in honor of a fallen police officer.

Roy Gene Turner, Jr. was shot in the line of duty in 2001. The park, named for his sacrifice, will give children in the Bonnie Doone neighborhood a safe place to play.

Turner's family said he would have been honored to see it.

"He loved children. This would be something he would really appreciate as a lasting tribute to him," said Olivia Turner, Turner's mother.

Roy Turner, Jr. left behind a son. Family members said they will bring the little boy to enjoy the park named after his dad.
