— The parents of a 3-month-old boy found dead at home last weekend have been charged with child abuse and neglect, police said.

Filaberto Isaiah Sanchez was found unconscious inside 110 S. Main St., Apt. 1, early Sunday, and paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene, Star Police Chief Dempsey Owens Jr. said.

The baby's body was sent to the Chief Medical Examiner's Office in Chapel Hill for an autopsy to determine a cause of death.

A preliminary investigation determined that the child had physical injuries, Owens said, so his parents were arrested.

Filaberto Cortes Sanchez and Christina Marie Johnson were being held Friday in the Montgomery County Jail under $50,000 secured bonds.

More charges could be filed in the case, depending on the autopsy results, Owens said.

I have been reading comments for years, but this is my first, and more than likely my last time actually commenting. I cannot take not speaking anymore. Not once in this story do I see mentioned that the parents were immigrants(illegal or legal) or that they were believing that God was going to heal this poor baby. If this baby's name was John Smith, no comments would have been made about immigration. Yes, given his name, one could assume that he was Hispanic. Well, my family name is Irish and I am a long way from being an Irish immigrant. Even if they are 1st generation here, does anyone really think that they went through all that it takes to come into this country (even illegally) not to be better? Yes, they need to be harshly punished, but why ALWAYS condemn an entire group of people because of the actions of a few? I guess my family should be condemned b/c they were unwanted during the potato famine. I expect criticism, but then, I will fit in with Jesus and the Hispanics.

Hopefully it's not the case in this instance, but many states (30?) allow parents to harm and even kill their children for religious reasons. They are allowed to "pray" instead of seeking medical treatment and for things like Type 1 diabetes or a severe infection and the kids die without treatment.

To me, cruelty and neglect should apply equally. Anyone disagree?

This is so sad... I agree. Do the same to these two idiots over and over again. There is ABSOLUTELY no excuse anyone can give for this.

I'll never understand how a woman can carry a baby inside her for 9 months and then do anything to harm it or allows it's father to do so. There's nothing I wouldn't do for my children. I could never intentionally harm them. This makes me so angry. At 3 months old, he couldn't possibly have done anything to warrant this type of abuse.

A 3-month old baby with physical injuries.

Someone was not properly prepared for parenthood and took out their ignorance on this wee child.

Praying it did not suffer for long before passing.

    God bless.

They're just here to make a decent life for their families. Not.

How could any one hurt a child? Or an animal for that matter. I hope these people think of that baby every day of their lives and never get another nights sleep. I hope the memory of the child haunts them.

I think that if someone kills another human being then they should have to die the same way. RIP little one!!!

Wow! How someone could hurt an infant is beyond me. Pick on someone your own size and see what you get. Well, this poor baby doesn't have to suffer anymore. What a sad, sad story.
