Parents angry after public schools dismiss classes early

Posted June 14

— Parents say they're upset that the superintendent of a New Jersey school district didn't give them enough notice that the classes would end early because of the excessive heat.

Jersey City public schools let out at 12:45 p.m. on Tuesday, two hours earlier than usual. The Jersey Journal reports ( ) parents came to schools only to find that school staff did not know about the early dismissal.

The temperature climbed above 90-degrees (32 Celsius) Tuesday. A school district spokesperson says the heat buildup was causing air conditioning in schools to malfunction.

School Board president Joel Torres says he found out about the early dismissal a minute before it happened. He says the school board will discuss the dismissal at a regular caucus.
