— An 82nd Airborne Division paratrooper died early Sunday of a gunshot wound at a barracks room next to Butner Road, authorities said.

Pfc. Matthew R. Grandy, 24, of Wake Forest, was a member of 1st Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team. He came to the unit in September 2007.

The incident was under investigation Monday by Army authorities, and no details of the shooting were released.

Grandy is survived by his mother and father, Theresa and Alfred Grandy, and a sister, Alisha Grandy, all of Wake Forest.

whocares, it is because of the war and the bad economic times we are now facing. If you are not a war time veteran, you really don't have any idea of what these young men & women go through daily.

I have not gone through as much as the military members now are going through, but I am still a war time vet, and it is a daily battle. And then, we don't get the help and support from our gov't. They think we can just turn off the feelings when we come home.

Prepare to see more of this, much more

My prayers goes out to the family including his young son, Joshua. I know Matthew was preparing to leave for Iraq and spending time with Joshua. May God Bless his soul.
