Pakistan rights group demands release of Turkish educator

Posted September 28

— A Pakistani rights group has called for the release of the Turkish former director of a chain of private schools who was detained along with his two daughters.

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan said Thursday that Mesut Kacmaz and his daughters were taken from their home in Lahore the night before. It was not immediately clear which security agency detained them, and police said they are investigating.

Kacmaz was among several Turkish teachers who were ordered out of the country when Pakistan shut down the PakTurk International Schools and Colleges.

Turkey said the schools were linked to Fethullah Gulen, a U.S.-based dissident cleric whom Ankara says was behind an attempted coup last year. PakTurk has denied any links to Gulen, who has denied involvement in the failed coup.
