— Police on Tuesday were searching for two men who broke into a Rocky Mount home late Monday and shot and robbed the homeowner.

Joseph Jerome Maxwell, 42, was in critical condition at Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville following the incident, police said.

Two men brandishing handguns burst into the home at 515 Edgecombe St. after 8 p.m. and demanded money. One gunman fired several shots, hitting Maxwell in the head and body, police said.

The men fled with an undisclosed amount of money, the phone from the house and other items, police said.

Two other people in the house then ran to a nearby magistrate's office to call police.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 252-977-1111.

I seem to recall that there was a front page story in the newspaper on January 1st where Chief Manley advised the crime in Rocky Mount had dropped 11 %.... holmesap

What's your point? Maybe crime has dropped, but it hasen't stopped. Did you have some misguided thought that crime was only a 11% and since it dropped 11%, there was no more crime?

Crime Stoppers wants information on the robbers but we have no description. Were they green aliens, aliens who need a green card, disadvantaged persons of color, or a pair of rednecks looking for their hunting dog? Give us something to go on so we won't have to speculate.

I would imagine we will have to find that out for ourselves, otherwise crimestoppers would not need our help. Then again they probably would. We ARE talkin' about Rocky Mount here. I live in one of the "safer" neiborhoods, and still feel the need to be as armed as Wyatt Earp at the OK Corral to just check my mail. Going to Wal-Mart after dark? Better bring Doc along.
