UNC students give back to one who loves them like her own
Two students started a fundraising effort to help the dining services worker who picks them up with prayer.
Posted — Updated"I just see the God in them, and we just had that connection from day one," she said.
"Deborah and I have this going on, and she says, 'Don't let the devil get you down!'" Adams said.
The relationship extended beyond mealtimes to text messages and phone calls.
"They take time for me," Paige said.
"I know we expected God would do something huge, but maybe like not that huge," Adams said.
The girls had launched a fundraising website, hoping to help Paige with her bills. Within a week, they had $5,000.
"Wooo! I was overwhelmed," Paige said.
"Thanks to their love and support, I was able to put ole Betsy to the side and get something more reliable."
Many of the donations came from students, in increments of $5 and $10.
Inspired by the generosity, the students raised their goal. They hope to raise $79,000 to erase Paige's overall debt accrued over years of serious family illnesses.
"My son has been sick since he was 13, and he is now 33," Paige explained. "My husband was recently dealing with a second bout with cancer, and I had a knee replacement."
The students are hoping to raise enough to help Paige emerge from bankruptcy.
"These are my angels," she said.
"They give me the inner strength that I need to let me know that it is going to be OK, that we're going to get through this together."
