DURHAM, N.C. — An overturned tractor-trailer closed lanes of northbound Interstate 85 early Saturday.

Authorities said the accident happened on ice-slick roads at about 1 a.m. The right lane was closed just north of U.S. Highway 15/501 until about 7:30 a.m.

Ice and snow along the highway melted on Friday, ran off onto the travel lanes and froze overnight. The shoulder in that area was covered in snow, and the road surface was slick and shiny by dawn on Saturday, when temperatures were in the 20s. It appeared that the accident could have been caused by wintry weather, although authorities had not made a definite determination.

DOT crews closed the Cole Mill Road ramp to I-85 and were plowing slush and treating the ramp surface with salt and sand to improve traction.

The driver of the truck was not seriously injured, authorities said.
