HENDERSON, N.C. — All northbound lanes of Interstate 85 were closed near exit 214 (N.C. Highway 49) in Henderson Saturday evening because of a crash involving a tractor-trailer, the state Department of Transportation said.

According to police, the tractor-trailer was pulling two additional trailers when it overturned, damaging a bridge near Andrews Avenue.

Joe Hendrick and his wife were headed home when they saw the truck swerving.

"We saw the tractor clear the bridge and drop to the road that was under the bridge," he said.

Hendrick said he rushed over to help the driver.

"He was hollering 'help me' and was asking please help me please help me," Hendrick said.

Hendrick said he pulled the driver to safety. The trucker was taken to Duke Hospital.

Motorist were being detoured to N.C. 39, exit 214, to U.S. 1 bypass north back to I-85 north. The right lane of I-85 north was reopened around 10 p.m. The left lane of I-85 north is expected to remain closed until Jun. 6 for bridge repairs.

It is unclear what caused the wreck.
