CARY, N.C. — U.S. Route 1 reopened early Saturday after a fuel tanker truck overturned late Friday night, prompting authorities to shut the road down in both directions for several hours while they worked to remove the trapped driver, upright the truck and clean up spilled fuel.

The incident occurred shortly after 10 p.m. near Ten-Ten Road in Wake County. Cary police reopened the road nearly seven hours later.

Cary police said the unidentified driver was pinned in the truck for about 20 minutes after the crash. The driver was rushed for medical care to WakeMed in Cary, where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries, police said.

An overturned tanker closed both directions of US 1 near Apex Friday night.

Police said the truck was carrying 3,000 gallons of fuel when it crashed, blocking both side of the road.

Investigators did not immediately say why the driver lost control of the vehicle or if any charges would be filed in connection with the incident.

A second tanker truck was called to the scene to transport fuel carried by the wrecked vehicle. Authorities said some of the fuel carried by the tanker truck leaked from the vehicle but it was contained by local hazmat crews.
