SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. — A log truck overturned on U.S. Highway 1 in Moore County Monday afternoon, blocking travel in both directions just south of Midland Road. The four-lane highway was down to one northbound lane as law enforcement, emergency and construction personnel worked to clear the scene.

Witnesses said the truck's load shifted as it rounded a curve, causing it to flip over the median.

Driver Larry Lee Crab, of Carthage, was taken to a hospital with serious injuries, according to Chris Burgess of the Southern Pines Police Department.

Some of the logs flipped into the southbound lanes and landed on motorcyclist Larry Eugene Martin, of Aberdeen. He, too, was hospitalized with serious injuries.

Law enforcement officers from Southern Pines and the North Carolina State Highway Patrol established a detour, directing drivers to use U.S. Highway 501 and N.C. Highway 2 to avoid the area.

The highway was reopened at about 9:30 p.m.
