— Orange County Schools Superintendent Gerri Martin has resigned to care for her mother, who has cancer, the school district said.

Martin, who was superintendent for nearly eight months, submitted her resignation to district leaders during Monday’s regular school board meeting. Board members unanimously accepted her resignation.

Martin will receive a $100,000 payment as part of an agreement. Her contract ran through June 2017.

Martin was previously superintendent of McDowell County Schools. Del Burns, who led Wake County schools before resigning in 2010, will serve as interim superintendent.
