Chapel Hill, N.C. — An Orange County man who was bitten by a king cobra earlier this month is out of the hospital, and he celebrated his recovery on Facebook.
Ali Iyoob, 21, called 911 on May 2 to tell dispatchers he had been bitten by a snake he owned.
“I just got bit by a king cobra, and I’m on my way to the hospital,” Iyoob told the dispatcher.
Iyoob said that he was suffering blurry vision and was "sweating like crazy" following the bite. He began driving himself to UNC Hospitals but eventually pulled over along N.C. Highway 54 and waited for emergency personnel to arrive.
While he was being treated, animal service workers removed Iyoob's collection of more than 30 snakes from his home.
They found 18 venomous snakes, 16 nonvenomous snakes, one caiman (a crocodile relative), two turtles, five chickens, eight chicks, four quail, four fish, one cat and one dog inside his 5201 NC Highway 54 home.
