HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. — Authorities are investigating the apparent suicide of an inmate in the Orange County Jail.

Detention officers found the body of William Marvin Tillery, 55, in his cell early Thursday, authorities said. Suicide notes were found on the body, they said.

Tillery’s body was taken to the Chief State Medical Examiner’s Office in Chapel Hill for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

The State Bureau of Investigation was called in to review the case, and the Orange County Sheriff's Office is conducting an internal investigation.

Tillery was jailed on May 24 on a charge of assault on a female, authorities said.
