Orange County ambulance stolen, wrecked

Posted April 1, 2011

— A Chapel Hill man stole an Orange County ambulance and crashed it into several vehicles Friday morning before he was apprehended, police said.

Paramedics responded to a medical assistance call on Deerwood Court and were treating a man when he ran from the house and commandeered their ambulance, police said. He drove the ambulance around the neighborhood, striking parked vehicles Longleaf Drive, Willow Drive and Emory Drive.

Police said the ambulance also hit a Chapel Hill fire truck.

The unidentified man finally crashed the ambulance at the dead end of Emory Drive and was detained by Chapel Hill police. He was taken to UNC Hospitals for a medical evaluation and treatment of minor injuries, police said.

Charges are pending in the case, police said.

I trust part of his "medical evaluation" is going to be blood and urine tests for illegals drugs.

Us EMS "folks" work very hard at what we do. We don't get the strong public recognition, the restaurant discounts, and most certainly not the love the press. Once in a while things happen...It's been a rough couple of weeks for Orange County. Three crew members were hurt in an accident, and a troubled individual who these "folks" were trying to help took upon himself to make a poor decision. Day after day, night after night us "folks" go to strangers houses that we never met before and offer aid and assistance. Pardon us "folks" if someone is able to steal an ambulance, I assure you every precaution is taken when we respond to a scene. WITH or WITHOUT the fire dept. We DO actually go to calls on our own with no other crews or backup. So OCVFF when when you think about making a comment on what us EMS "folks" need to do, go put water on your fire.

If I were to steal a car, I don't think an ambulance would be my first choice. You can't really cruise Main Street in an ambulance.
