Opening Day Wrap: How can we miss you if you won't go away
Lawmakers returned to Raleigh Wednesday for the ceremonial opening day of the 2017 legislative session - only three weeks after a series of special sessions that ended in rancor and recriminations.
Posted — UpdatedHouse Speaker Tim Moore and Senate President Pro Tem Phil Berger were re-elected to the top posts in each chamber, and both made a point in their opening remarks of emphasizing the need to work together.
Neither Moore, R-Cleveland, nor Berger, R-Rockingham, went into specifics about goals for the session, focusing broadly on issues such as limiting government spending and raising teacher salaries.
The first day of the session also marked the end of Denise Weeks' 24-year run as House clerk.
It also marked the perennial call by good-government advocates for independent redistricting, an effort that has repeatedly failed to clear the Senate, if not the House as well.
