Online encounter leads to stolen money, shots fired in Fayetteville

One person was arrested and another sought after a man meeting a woman through an online service was shot at and had money taken from him Wednesday, police said.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — One person was arrested and another sought after a man meeting a woman through an online service was shot at and had money taken from him Wednesday, police said.

Jeremy Patterson, 25, of Southern Pines, drove to Fayetteville to meet a woman at a hotel near Eutaw Shopping Center. While in the hotel room, two unknown men entered, including one with a handgun. There was no confrontation but money was taken from Patterson's belongings, police said.

Patterson then followed the two men after they entered a grey SUV. While on Lyon Road near Stamper Road, one of the men, wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt, exited the SUV and fired a handgun at Patterson's vehicle, police said. A bullet struck Patterson's vehicle but he was not injured. The SUV then fled in an unknown direction.

Detectives identified two suspects - Brianna Sharnee Stewart, 18, of 6105 Abco Lane in Fayetteville and Michael Jerome Payne, 19, of 321 Whipple Tree Lane in Fayetteville.

Both have been charged with felonious larceny. Stewart was being processed at the Cumberland County jail Thursday afternoon. Payne has not been apprehended.
