Onipaa celebration honors Queen Liliuokalani's 179th birthday

HONOLULU, HI — Iolani Palace continues to celebrate Queen Liliuokalani's 179th Birthday Monday.

The Queen's birthday would have been yesterday.

The 11th Annual Onipaa Celebration included live musical performances, hula, Hawaiian cultural practitioners, palace tours, food and living history walks.

The event's musical performances began with the historic Royal Hawaiian Band followed by appearances throughout the day by other legendary musicians including Jerry Santos and friends, Kuuipo Kumukahi, Nola Nahulu, and Keauhou.

Guests could also take part in the Mai Poina: "The Overthrow Walking Tours, The Trial of a Queen, The Annexation Debate," which reenact the days leading up to and including the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy. For more information, visit www.hawaiiponoi.info.

If you missed Sunday's Living history walking tours retracing the days leading up to and including the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarch, more are offered on Labor day and next weekend. Tours begin at 4:00 p.m., 4:20 p.m., 4:40 p.m., and 5:00 p.m.
